- CHAFER FABRICThe name denoting the fabric, in motor tyre making, that is placed between the bead and the overlapping edges of the builder fabric (see this), and has for an object the relieving of the friction between these two sections. It occupies a position on the sides of the tyre where most bending stress is encountered, and should therefore be light and flexible. It is plain weave, weighing from 9 to 91/4-oz. per square yard, 34-ends and 34 picks per inch; yams 16's 5-ends, 6 turns; 22's 4-ends, 81/2 turns. Should be made from the most flexible cotton obtainable.
